Rethinking Manhood
S2, E3: To The Men Survivors of SA
*Content Warning:
This episode is about men and masculine folks who are survivors of sexual assault. Please take care of yourself if you choose to listen to this episode. If you are personally impacted by sexual assault and need someone to talk to, please know that you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673).
"Researchers have found that at least 1 in 6 men have experienced sexual abuse or assault, whether in childhood or as adults. And this is probably a low estimate, since it doesn’t include non-contact experiences, which can also have lasting negative effects. If you’ve had such an experience, or think you might have, you are not alone." (1in6.org)
Sexual assault is something that many men and masculine folks have experienced, but also something that most men don't talk about (because of shame, fear, etc). In this episode I share some of my personal experiences, and just information on the impact of sexual assault.
Some resources for men and masculine folks
- You can chat anonymously and confidentially with a RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) support specialist who is trained to help at online.rainn.org
- Male Survivor has different webinars, live events, and also support groups that you can join (some of these support groups offered are also identity based).
- 1 and 6 has resources for friends and families of survivors, ranging from book recommendations, statistics, and survivor stories.
Sending all my love to the survivors out there. You are not alone. <3
